The challenge
Portishead Police headquarters went to tender to find an experienced commercial electrical contractor to replace their backup generators. Electrio has worked with the police force at Portishead for over 15 years and won the tender based on cost and experience.
The solution
Electrio spent four months planning the detailed electrical design work needed for the project. Some of the information they were sent was based on the headquarter’s original set up and didn’t include changes that had been made over the years. The team went on site to investigate and nail down the electrical specification in order to plan the UPS system and current junctions needed.
Once they’d confirmed accurate information, they began planning how to implement the system at the headquarters with minimal disruption, including cable rooting and panel design work.
Electrio took delivery of two 800KVA generators as temporary backups while the team worked to replace the permanent generators and panels. Both the temporary and permanent generators being installed include an SCR system that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions from the diesel engines, making the generators more environmentally friendly. The generators form the independent backup component of the headquarter’s N+1 redundancy, ensuring a power supply if police headquarters lose their mains supply.
With the temporary generators and panel in place Electrio’s experienced electrical team was able to start work replacing the permanent generators.
Work is currently ongoing. The team is looking forward to the challenge of switching to the permanent generators with minimal disruption once they’re in place.
