The Challenge

To urgently install a new LV Switch at this busy maternity hospital, which operates five theatres and a delivery suite, ensuring no loss to power during the installation.

The Solution

As a busy maternity hospital in central Bristol, St Michael’s Hospital could not afford to lose power. When their switch panel developed faults, causing several power outages, they asked Electrio to assess the problem.

Electrio’s electrical engineers discovered that the main switch panel to the hospital had two 1000amp incoming supplies directly from local HV transformers, which was causing some switching issues, leading to disruption within the hospital. The team recommend installing a new low voltage switch panel as the existing equipment was over 40 years old and obsolete.

To ensure a continuous power supply to the hospital, a new panel was installed whilst the old panel remained supplying the building. Once the new panel was installed and connected to one of the incoming supplies, all the sub-main supplies were transferred over. The majority of the work was carried out during the nights or over weekends. As an added precaution, Electrio’s electricians transferred one sub main at a time to the new panel to limit disruption to the services within St Michael’s Hospital. Once the transfer was completed, the second incoming supply was installed directly from the LV side of the second HV transformer to ensure N+1 was achieved.

“I was very impressed with the dedication and commitment of your staff when carrying out the works to a very high standard in very difficult circumstances i.e. reduced working period, additional works and having to work out of sequence to facilitate other trades. I can only thank you again and ask that you pass this on to all of your team. I do not know how you managed to achieve it, but you did.”

Building Officer, North Bristol NHS Trust
