BRI Hospital Central Sterile Services Department

The Challenge

To rewire and update the lighting systems within a central sterile services department (CSSD) in a major hospital, with minimum disruption to the cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing of reusable medical equipment.

Our Solution

We worked closely on the refurbishment of the CSSD with the central building contractor, CW Dukes and the lighting designer Connected Light, to rewire the existing installation with a steel conduit, which included a trunking containment system for new lighting and power circuits. To maintain the integrity and cleanliness of the area the new lights were all controlled via Philips PIR detectors.

The project was very challenging firstly because our electricians had to carry out the work whilst the departments continued to operate, because of this we broke the project into phases to suit the needs of the NHS. Where possible, as much preparation work was carried out during the week, allowing this central department to remain operational during normal working hours. Then at the weekends and later in the evening, our electricians were able to complete the final phases.

The second challenge was preserving the sterile environment. Since most of work was conducted within sterile areas, we adopted a managed working system to ensure no cross contamination.

“Just to say thank you to all those involved in this project - for delivering the job in time, on budget and to an excellent standard. ”

Business Development & Planning Director, Wiltshire Community Health Services

“I have been asked to pass on the thanks of our CEO for your valuable assistance during the power supply problems of Sunday evening and Monday morning. Please extend this to all members of your team who were involved in the works. ”

Hospital Engineer, Royal United Hospitals, Bath

“I was very impressed with the dedication and commitment of your staff when carrying out the works to a very high standard in very difficult circumstances i.e. reduced working period, additional works and having to work out of sequence to facilitate other trades. I can only thank you again and ask that you pass this on to all of your team. I do not know how you managed to achieve it, but you did.”
